UTN's Master & Exchange Reception (MER)



Week 1

Monday 21/8

  • Welcome presentation | 13:00 - 15:00
    We will gather to mingle and give some information about the reception, the union, the nations & other good things to know as a new student in Uppsala!
    Here you will also receive your goodie bags and wristbands which you will need to enter TDB's party tent. (If you miss this activity you can get those items at our event tent later on)

  • Campus Tour | 15:00 - 16:00
    It can get tricky to find the exact place of the print room or micro room when you are new to the campus. Why not go around the campus together?

    The meeting point for this activity is the West entrance of Ångström House 10

  • Waffle | 16:00 - 19:00
    We will gather at our event tent to have waffles together and chat! This will be a great opportunity to mingle with your fellow international students.

Tuesday 22/8

  • Sorting Hat Ceremony & Costumizing of the sashes | 13:00 - 18:00
    Don't miss out on this activity!

    At the science and technology faculty (TekNat) we have several so-called "sections" for various study disciplines. Those are organisations run by students of the respective programmes. Part of our student culture is that all students have section clothing in the respective sections' colours which they can customize with patches and more. Usually, students get their section clothing a bit later in the semester but participants of MER have the privilege of getting an early accessory in the form of a sash in order to take part in this aspect of our student culture from the very beginning.

    This activity starts with a sorting hat ceremony (think Harry Potter) that will determine your section based on your studies. Afterwards, you will have the chance to acquire one of our sashes and will have the chance to customize it at our crafting stations.

Wednesday 23/8

  • Time slot for programme-specific activities | 8:00 - 17:00
    This time slot is reserved for programme-specific activities. If you are unsure if your programme has planned anything for you make sure to double-check your emails.
    Otherwise, this time slot is free time for you :)

  • International PUB | 17:30
    We and UTN's Pub Crew want to welcome you to our Union house Uthgård where we have prepared an international Pub for everybody. There will also be some activities planned by the Pub Crew and you will have the chance to buy food and beverages. A great time to mingle and have fun!

    Please bring a valid ID as well a a proof of UTN-union membership!

    Important! By Swedish law, it's not allowed to bring your own alcohol to the union house!
    Also, be there on time to avoid standing in the queue as we might not have enough room for everyone in Uthgård!

Thursday 24/8

  • Songooks and Tickets to the Sittning | 12:00 - 13:00
    You will have the chance to buy songbooks and tickets to our big "sittning" on Friday 1/9 at our event tent. A "sittning" is an evening event organised by students where usually a three-course meal is served and songs from the songbook are sung. Having a songbook is a part of Uppsala student life because during "sittnings" and "gasques" (finer sittnings) your fellow students will write small messages into your songbooks and vice versa. It is a nice way to keep memories from your time as a student here :)

  • Fika & Swedish lesson | 15:00 -17:00
    In this activity, we will teach you a little bit about Sweden and student life in Uppsala. This is the perfect time to ask questions that you have about those topics. Of course, in the spirit of this lesson this activity is accompanied by a nice "Fika" (coffee time).

  • Grill | 17:00 - 19:00
    After the Swedish lesson, it is time to go out and enjoy the weather. We will do this by grilling at our event tent. The grilling will be led by our one and only grillmaster Hanna "Hanna Hyllander" Hyllander.

    Moebius section evening | 18:00
    All Moebius-section students are invited to spend an evening with the Moebius section. There will be board games and good company!

Friday 25/8

  • Uppsala University's welcome reception | 11:00 - 14:00
    This is a formal welcome ceremony by Uppsala University to welcome new students. Starting with a welcome speech in the Grand Auditorium together with beautiful music. This is followed by a fair with student accossiations, nations and other important bodies of the university. You can find all the information here.
    We will also be there to show you the right way.

  • Sign up for the nations | 15:00 - 19:00
    This is a convenient time for you to go into town and sign up for the student nations. The student nations have a very long and old history and are a central part of Uppsala student life. Make sure to sign up for at least one of them to be able to access all of their events.

Saturday 26/8

  • Sting Festival 10:00 - 15:30
    Don't miss out on this activity!

    Sting Festival is a great place where you will have a chance to talk to most of the sections, UTN committees, nations and other Uppsala organisations. It is one of the events that is highly suggested to attend to get a grasp of what events will happen in the future and how you can take part in them.

  • Nation Night
    We highly encourage you to meet up with your friends to go and experience a night at a nation. We at MER will not organise a meet-up for this.

Sunday 27/8

  • Free day
    There are no MER events planned for this day. Use the time to meet your new friends and explore the city :)

Week 2

Monday 28/8

  • Lectures | 8:00 - 17:00
    University is beginning and the first courses are starting, in the first week usually during this time period. Make sure you don't miss out on your classes!

  • Campus Tour | 13:00 - 14:00
    This is your chance to get a campus tour if you have missed the first one.
    It can get tricky to find the exact place of the print room or micro room when you are new to the campus. Why not go around the campus together?
    There are different tours to all 4 campuses; Ångström, BMC, Geo, and EBC

  • Grill and catch up for late arrivals | 17:00 - 19:30
    You will have the chance to listen to the Welcome presentation in case you missed the first one.
    We will gather to mingle and give some information about the reception, the union, the nations & other good things to know as a new student in Uppsala!
    Here you will also receive your goodie bags and wristbands which you will need to enter TDB's party tent. (If you miss this activity you can get those items at our event tent later on)

    After the Welcome presentation, it is time to go out and enjoy the weather. We will do this by grilling at our event tent. The grilling will be led by our one and only grillmaster Hanna "Hanna Hyllander" Hyllander.

    GRUS section evening | 16:30
    All GRUS-section students are invited to spend a day with the GRUS section.

    16:30 - Introducing GRUS and GS, active student sections at our campus (Also ordering of pizzas)
    17:00 - A tour of campus Geocentrum
    17:15 - Section overall initiation ("Ovve-invigning": Information about the Ovve and dos and don'ts when wearing it)
    Pizza dinner!
    18:30 - GRUS-pentathlon
    20:00 - Hang out, table tennis, celebrating victory, etc.

    There will be games and activities as an introduction to the section, plus sign up opportunities etc.

  • Recce Dance Lesson | 17:00 - 19:00
    Did you know that each academic year in Uppsala has its own dance and song? You will see literally hundreds of students dancing the dance to their reception year's song! Does that sound cool? Then join us and learn this year's dance! We will be also performing it during our "sitting" on friday.

  • City Rally | 15:00 - 17:00
    Would you like to solve puzzles to visit important places in Uppsala and get to know more about them? It is a fun event to join with friends and compete in a group!

  • Language Café | 17:15 - 19:15
    Are you interested in learning or speaking different languages? Here you will have the chance to do exactly that! Get together with other language enthusiasts and speak the language of your desire while enjoying a nice Fika at our Café Bocken. Starting with this day the language café will take place every second Wednesday at our union house Uthgård.

    K section evening | 17:00
    All K-Section students are invited to spend an evening with the K section.

    We plan on it being a barbeque where we provide a fire and everyone can bring whatever they'd like to cook, however we might change it to a picnic depending on the weather.

    Test your knowledge from the Swedish lessons! We will be having a fun quiz about Sweden.
    You will also be able to hang out together and play some board games.

  • Finale: Sittning in the tent! 18:00 - 00:00
    Sittningar are a long-lived student tradition in Uppsala. We will eat dinner together, sing songs, have a "spex" and talk to our newfound friends. It is the best way to end your week and get ready for your new chapter of life. Make sure to buy the tickets for the event beforehand!

Saturday 2/9

  • Outdoor activities | 12:00 - 17:00
    For everybody who still hasn't had enough of the reception we will have a chill day in the outdoors and will play some classic Swedish outdoor games like "Kubb" or "Brännboll"
    This will be the last official activity for MER.

Sunday 3/9

  • MER is over but UTN has a lot more to offer
    We hope you had lots of fun during our reception! And we also hope to see you again soon!
    MER might be over, but UTN has much more activities to offer and we are eager to welcome our international students as well.

    - There is a Puzzle Hunt Rally (Rebusrally) right around the corner at the end of September. Make sure to take part in their Rally Pub for a chance to win a place in the rally cars.
    - In November we will be organising our giant career fair Utnarm on campus Ångström. There are lots of opportunities to take part in it as part of the team and have a greater chance to network.
    - And of course, we will be having our biweekly Language Café here at Café Bocken where you will be able to speak a whole assortment of languages while enjoying a nice Fika.

    The best way to stay informed about these and other events as well as opportunities for international students throughout the year is to join our International HUB on Facebook.
    There are lots of ways you can take part in UTN's events or even involve yourself in them. Don't be afraid to approach us, we are happy to welcome you to our big family :)
